1964 Chevrolet Corvair RampSide Pickup Good Ole Truck Nice Driver
The Chevrolet Corvair is a compact car manufactured by Chevrolet for model years 1960–1969 in two generations. It remains the only American-designed, mass-produced passenger car with a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine. The Corvair was manufactured and marketed in 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, convertible, 4-door station wagon, passenger van, commercial van, and pickup truck body styles in its first generation (1960–1964) and as a 2-door coupe, convertible or 4-door hardtop in its second (1965–1969) – with a total production of approximately 1.8 million from 1960–1969.
The name "Corvair" originated as a portmanteau of Corvette and Bel Air, a name first applied in 1954 to a Corvette-based concept with a hardtop fastback-styled roof, part of the Motorama traveling exhibition. When applied to the production models, the "air" part referenced the engine's cooling system.
A station wagon, marketed as the Lakewood, joined the lineup in 1961 with its engine located under the cargo floor and offering 68 ft³ of cargo room; 58 ft³ in the main passenger compartment, and another 10 ft³ in the front trunk. Chevrolet also introduced the Corvair 95 line of light-duty trucks and vans, using the Corvair Powerpack with forward-control, or "cab over", with the driver sitting over the front wheels, as in the Volkswagen Type 2.
This rare Rampside Pickup is what I would call a good ole truck- a usable good running vehicle in overall solid condition that one could use as is and would be a good basis for a restoration. The overall impression of the truck is pretty good from 10 feet but as you get closer you notice dents here and there, and some corrosion coming through the repaint in most lower areas of the bodywork. The truck is pretty complete and even has it original owner's manual. It runs and drives pretty well and while I would not go on a cross country trek in it without some additional sortng-its fine for around town or quick trips to the beach if you live close to one.
This iconic truck is really quite rare and interesting and will be a certain hit no matter what you do with it.
