1967 Pontiac Firebird Convertible 400/325 HP 4 Spd Original Rust Free Survivor

The Pontiac Firebird was produced by Pontiac from the 1967 to 2002 model years. Designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang, it was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM's Chevrolet division's platform-sharing Camaro. This also coincided with the release of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, Ford's upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang.

The first generation Firebird had characteristic Coke bottle styling shared with its cousin, the Chevrolet Camaro. Announcing a Pontiac styling trend, the Firebird's bumpers were integrated into the design of the front end, giving it a more streamlined look than the Camaro. The Firebird's rear "slit" taillights were inspired by the 1966–1967 Pontiac GTO and Pontiac Grand Prix. Both a two-door hardtop and a convertible were offered through the 1969 model year. Originally, the car was a "consolation prize" for Pontiac, which had desired to produce a two-seat sports car based on its original Banshee concept car. However, GM feared this would cut into Chevrolet Corvette sales, and gave Pontiac a piece of the "pony car" market by sharing the F-body platform with Chevrolet. The listed retail price before options for the coupe was $2,666 and the convertible was $2,903.

The 1967 base model Firebird came equipped with the Pontiac 230 cu in SOHC inline-six. The "Sprint" model six came with a four-barrel carburetor, developing 215 hp. Most buyers opted for one of three V8s: the 326 cu in with a two-barrel carburetor producing 250 hp; the four-barrel "HO" (high output) 326, producing 285 hp; or the 325 hp 400 cu in from the GTO. A "Ram Air" option was also available, providing functional hood scoops, higher flow heads with stronger valve springs, and a hotter camshaft. Power for the Ram Air package was the same as the conventional 400 HO, but peaked at 5,200 rpm.
Production for 1967 was 82.560 with only 15,528 Convertibles. Out of those, 7526 were built with the 400/325 HP Engine, and I am sure the number of 4 Spd cars is a fraction of that number.

The guy that ordered this car new wanted to do one thing- Go Fast and Look Good doing it! This car was speced with the top Engine, Gearbox, and Rear End offered, but very little else. No extra weight adding electric motors or power sapping Air Conditioning for him-just the Fold Down Rear Seat, Rally Gauge Cluster, Dual Exhausts, and Soft Ray Glass. The car was purchased in Hawaii in 1968 by a Serviceman and retained by him for many years. Its had just a few owners, the most recent having had it since 1993. He states the car is largely as he got it. He drove it sparingly on sunny summer days only and always kept it garaged. The car was repainted in its original color many years ago and the engine was rebuilt a some point, reportedly putting out more like 375 HP now. It runs and drives very well and we are doing some minor tweeking and detailing, and adding new red lines to make it as good as it can be for the new owner. Stay tuned for more photos!
